We all know that after "The Naming of Cats", Victoria goes off on her own to perform a private little 'dance'....
We also know that sitting there in the pipe, we see Mistoffelees "waiting for his cue" (which is a good 45-60 seconds away....watch his eyes and face...he's NOT just waiting for his cue; he's enjoying the 'view'). Whatever it is he's doing in there, he's watching Vickie VERY intently.
In an interview with Gillian Lynn (the choreographer of CATS), she says Victoria's dance symbolizes a young teenage girl 'discovering herself'.
Well...if that's the case, then MISTOFFELEES IS THE BIGGEST PERVERT IN THE WHOLE PLAY.
I dunno...I always thought Vickie was just grooming herself and Misto, being a playful adolescent, decided to pop out when she least expected it and throw her over (like real cats). But....she's discovering herself? And Misto is right up in there watching? And yet he doesn't even get to nail her in the Jellicle Ball?
Either way, if Vickie and Misto are siblings--this makes him a pervert; if they're just really good friends---it STILL makes him a pervert. If they were supposed to be boyfriend and girlfriend, then Misto got cheated BIGTIME. (If I were him, I woulda kicked Plato's ass after the Ball.)
What's your opinion on this questionable theory? Is cute lil' Misto a playful kitten or a creepy lil' pervert? Like I said...watch his head and face the entire time Vickie does her dance.
Unless he expected his cue to be between her legs, he's not waiting for it. I'm sure he can hear it; there is music playing after all, and he has done this many times before.....

Would it hurt to say I was giggling through this whole thing? I never thought of it that way... but you're right!

Aw, poor Misto! Lol. I always thought he kind of had a thing for Vicky, which is supported by the whole watching her dance thing (even if she is doing a 'self discovery'). If you notice too, during one of the slower songs or song sections (and of course I can't think of which song it is right now), he is sitting in the back by the car and has his paw on Vicky's shoulder as they watch the focal character dance/sing. I always felt bad at the Ball when Plato got the girl. (Does anybody know who Misto is 'paired' with during that dance scene? It seems as though many of the cats have kind of paired off, but I can't tell for everyone who is with who.)
Of course, the paw thing could also mean they are siblings (I mean, their coloration is similar enough), but you're right, that would make Misto a pervert unless he didn't understand what the whole dance was about (possible?). I always thought Vicky's dance was sort of the opening to the ball, after which Misto gives the invitation, so I would expect it to be open for others to watch. So I guess my vote is that he got cheated and should have kicked Plato's ass, lol. But I honestly never thought about it the other way.

lol...kinda makes you look at Misto a little differently, eh, Caffalle? Yeah, he's feeling her up in the BG during the Gus the Theater Cat song (on the line "These kittens, they do not get trained as we did in the days when Victoria reigned"). He also gives a butt-brush here and there when he gets the chance during the Jellicle Ball (I think maybe Jacob had a crush on Phyllida...or at least her butt XD) He gets paired with Electra during the Mating Dance. Watch for them in the very front of the stage rubbing heads when they do a long shot of Skimbleshanks making his way to the pair in the middle (possibly to give Plato some pointers? ). Electra mounts Misto, too. As they make their way to the pile, they rub and take turns mounting each other the whole way. So, even though he doesn't wind up with Vickie, he makes the best of what he has XD I thought that it was an invite to the Ball, too. I never woulda guessed it was a private dance she was doing...but that's what the choreographer had in mind when she did this....

Lol, you know what they say about curiosity and cats....But can you really blame him? He is an adolescent male after all.

AGREED! But there is a time and place for certain things...and if Misto wanted to feel up Vickie on his own time, then good for him! (hell, good for HER!) But during a very intricate and time-consuming dance number that requires your full concentration...perhaps he shoulda kept his curious hands to himself.
A LITTLE OFF TOPIC, BUT....I can't tell you how many times he and other toms messed up during the dance routines because they tried to dance too close to the girls or was busy watching the girls instead of paying attention. I love this movie, but they REALLY needed a stricter director, there were so many things that went wrong. The cast was superb, but they were also lazy (sorry to say). The music and songs were phenomenal, but it was hard to concentrate on the words when you're busy watching everyone screw around in the BG!
Jacob Brent is an outstanding dancer with grace that far surpasses most guys...but they didn't use him to his best potential...and they weren't strict enough with him. Just because he's cute doesn't mean he should have gotten away with lagging behind or touching someone's behind. (and this goes triple for John Partridge, who screwed around more then anyone!!)
Food For Thought (for me to momentarily stop picking on Jake; I know I sound mean, but I'm really a huge fan and I think they could've done so much better): I read somehwere that they filmed over 100 hours of footage during the making of the CATS movie. My question is this; In the whole of that 100 hours, you couldn't have come up with a better editing job?

... lazy editing staff?

Oh, that's right. I went there.... EXTREMELY lazy editing staff. Either that, or they just weren't paying attention. I can't be the only person who noticed the choppy editing. Take the Macavity song for example; the end of it to be exact. Every time they yell "Macavity", look at Bombalurina's (right?) glove. Every other scene, it's either up to her elbow or down to her wrist. Every couple of scenes! That shows me that they filmed that song several different times, and instead of trying to get the scenes to match, they keep switiching back and forth from wrist-low glove to elbow-high glove. It's distracting and it shows how choppy the editing is. Look at the Giant Cat Nap scene. Everyone who paired up when they all layed down in the middle miraculously switch positions as well as partners in the few second interval between them piling up, and waking up when they sense Grizabella. Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, The Rum Tum Tugger, Skimbleshanks and the Gumby Cat songs are also horribly chopped and even have chunks of the routine missing! Don't even get me started on the Pekes and the Pollicles song (they couldn't find ANY scenes with Phyllida sitting with Old D while Munk was singing the parts "The Pekes and the Pollicles everyone knows are proud and implaccable passionate foes" and "On the occassion of which I shall speak"? They HAD to shove Jo Bingham in Phyllida's costume in a really bad attempt at passing Jo off as Victoria because we are so dumb, we wouldn't notice...C'mon!) Pay very close attention to the background, the actors in the BG, the intense dance scenes (like the Jellicle Ball--watch as nobody keeps up with anyone and how no one is really trying to anyway.) and pay VERY close attention to warmers and gloves, which are always slipping down the arms and legs (cuz it would have killed them to use velcro to prevent that from happening). They are a dead giveaway to poor editing. And maybe this is me, but I noticed a couple nights ago....nearing the end of the Mister Mistoffelees song, where he takes Cassandra and bows with her to Old D. the camera shows Bombalurina for a split second watching in the BG...or is she? It may be Bomby's costume, but Rosemarie Ford is NOT in it! I don't know who that person is...it kinda looks like Plato in drag (and it just might be!) Am I the only one who noticed? Who the hell is that?

Plato in drag?? Lol. I will have to look again. I definitely noticed the absence of Victoria thing in that scene, and I agree, I don't see how they could have shot that scene (assuming they shot it several times, as that seems to be the case with the rest of the film as you pointed out) and not have had a shot of Phyllida in there somewhere. Unless she was somehow out for the whole day. Maybe she was sick? *ponders* Despite that whole fiasco, the Pekes and the Pollices remains one of my favorite scenes, mostly due to Michael Gruber's facial expressions throughout . And I noticed the warmer thing too! I was like, is it supposed to be like that? Or does it keep falling down? The only thing I can say to that is that perhaps they were trying to cut to the best shots overall for the song, and so had to cut between versions. I forget how short the shooting/production schedule was, but perhaps in their effort to cut it together they didn't notice little things like arm warmers being up or down. As avid fans, of course, we notice all of that, lol. I've seen interviews from other movies and shows (I recall specifically Patrick Stewart at DragonCon talking about Star Trek), where those people involved in the making of the show are so caught up in the moment and all they are doing that they don't remember all the stuff that the fans pick up on afterward. Patrick Stewart couldn't even remember some of the episodes he was in! (Granted, he did a LOT of episodes.) I didn't really notice about people not keeping up with each other, but perhaps that's because I've been focused on what different individual characters have been doing the last few times I watched it, rather than the whole group. I knew they cut part of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer's routine, but what did they cut out of the other songs? They seemed complete to me from what I was able to find of other soundtracks.

I grew up in the days of American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance?. We all know the judges on those shows pick up on every little mistake the contenstants make. Growing up in this generation with those shows, it's no wonder why I'm so nit-picky (that and I've seen CATS about 1200 times XD).
The dancers are great, but as a group, they were lacking. The ones in the back lag behind, and the ones up front aren't as in sync as they ought to be. It looks like they're actually trying to out-dance each other sometimes (Check out Misto and Tumblebrutus during the Jellicle Ball song, after the toms carry off the queens. Not only does it look like they're trying to out-dance each other, but Misto says something to Tumble too. I don't know what he said...yet, but I'm really good at reading lips).
Yes, they can get ahead of themselves and so into their roles that they lose track of what their doing or simply forget what it was they actually did. But...if you watch it enough, you can tell what's a mistake, and what's done out of sheer laziness.
My point remains valid. Love the movie, love the music, love the costumes (well, Tumblebrutus' costume was a little too revealing) and I adore the actors.
The director and editor could've done better.

Oh, come on guys, get off of Plato *cuddles* If Misto isn't fast enough he has bad luck at the mating dance But there're some things I didn't get so far ... *frowns* However I finally found the prove that Electra indeed is taking in Misto's lost shoe at the beginning of the peaks and the Pollicles randomly - by making one of my music videos ;D Have to look my DVD once again ... it's quite too long ago!
